What Maria Discovered at the Dreaded VIP Event That You Need to Know.

When Your Judge Voice Predicts the Worst

Ever dread an event, convinced everyone will be awful?

Maria inner 'judge voice' did.

It was a work event mixed her close contacts with a wider, very senior circle.

Her organisation was intensely hierarchical.

Everyone vying for VIP attention.

Everyone ignoring the 'mere mortals' - of which she was one.

She assumed everyone would be negative and greedy with their time.

Any deeper conversations would fall by the wayside.

The Voice We All Have

In the Peak Resilience Accelerator programme I run for teams, we talk about "judges."

Those negative voices every human hears that rear their heads too often.

The voice of self-doubt telling us we aren't worthy.

We're wrong.

What we do or say is stupid.

I've got one.

If I had to guess, I'd say, so do you.

We all do.

Recognise this voice?

The Technique That Changed Her Evening

Maria used one technique from the programme: the "Find the 10%" game.

Focus on even the few things you can agree on.

In our discussion, she admitted afterwards she was pleasantly surprised.

Yes, there were some sycophants.

But she found genuine connection too.

She reminded herself: even the negative people have their own judges.

They're likely judging themselves.

What Miranda Discovered

This sparked another participant, her colleague, Miranda.

Miranda's judge was proven wrong a week earlier.

A junior person deputized for her.

Miranda worried constantly about colleagues catching her out.

She goes over every detail and relays them all.

However, her deputy presented far less detail than Miranda normally offers.

Plus, she had a charming way of reassuring people: "If I don't have all the answers now, I'll find them."

Miranda realized her colleague's style was just as valid as her own.

Maybe she didn't need such dramatic lengths in her presentations.

The Real Win

Proving the incorrect assumptions that feed your 'judge' wrong is vital for mental fitness.

Challenging them means previous judgments won't continue to hold you back.
